The U.S. Department of Education announced that Westport’s Staples High School has been named a National Blue Ribbon School for its academic excellence.
Each year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes both private and public elementary, middle, and high schools across the nation where students perform at significantly high levels. According to a video announcement by Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education, “each of the recognized schools sends a strong message that despite the very real challenges that students, families, and communities face, with great teaching, great Principals, hard work, and vital support, every student can achieve.”
Of the 286 schools honored nationwide, Staples High School is one of only two high schools in Connecticut to receive this honor; the other is Weston High School.
The U.S. Department of Education will honor the awarded schools at a recognition ceremony on November 18 in Washington, D.C. For a list of all 2013 National Blue Ribbon Schools visit http://www2.ed.gov/programs/nclbbrs/2013/national.pdf.
