Today the Westport Library is holding an open house to show off its Maker Space. Invited by the Obama Administration to join the National Day of Making, inside you can find tours and demonstrations of it’s newly installed Design Center.
"Makey - Makey takes your keyboard and your controller and pulls it out," said Margaret Pastel of the Westport Library. "It turns whatever you want into the keyboard of your computer," she said.
That’s just one invention being celebrated today, along with 3-d Printers, lego robotics, and variety of other tech projects.
“It’s not every day you are doing the same thing as President Obama,” said Jaina Lewis of the Westport Library.
Down in D.C, the White House is holding its own Maker Faire with President Obama declaring it the first ever National Maker Day.
"I hope every company, every college, every community and every citizen - joins us in encouraging builders and do-ers across the country," said President Obama in a press conference.
And this library is joining in on the festivities, encouraging local creativity from Westport Community.
"Actually bringing things out into the center of the library, brings people in who might normally be timid to ask a question," said Jaina.
This Permanent Maker Space has been here for around two years, after the Maker Faire saw great success. And now, with a one-year federal grant secured back in October, the space has been able to grow even further.
"It's very exciting to see people from the community actually bring things to us. It starts a conversation," said Bill Derry of the Westport Library.
And so far, it’s seen a lot of success. The Library’s Assitant Director Bill Derry tells me around ten inventors got their start here.
"Economic development is the purpose of the Maker Space, so when we see that we feel convinced that it was a good platform to start this Maker Space on," said Derry.
You can come tinker, create and discover your own maker abilities any time during the week. And for more information on upcoming events, you can go to Westport Library dot org.
