The Westport Arts Center is looking to expand and this property here on Jesup Green could soon be it's new home.
"We are running out of space," said the Executive Director Peter Van Heerden, so we are expanding beyond our geographic footprint. We can only fit 12 people in our classroom and often we over subscribe. So, we have a waiting list for that," he said.
Right now, you can find the Westport Arts Center on Riverside Avenue: A beautiful spot located on the water. But, this 3500 square foot space is rented, and the Executive Director Peter Van Heerden tells me the price to rent is a financial burden.
Plus, the programs and attractions offered by this artist hot spot are growing. The 2014 -2015 seasonal program recently being announced and it includes several new educational programs for all ages.
The project, as currently outlined, would include two galleries, an auditorium, studio space a gift shop and a café. This expansion would come at the same time the Library, also located near Jesup Green, is being transformed.
"You know the Library is expanding, the Levitt Pavilion has beautifully expanded, so we are looking at being apart of that and creating a cultural campus," said Van Heerden.
Now the Arts Center has said the cost is estimated at $3 million, all to be raised through private funds. But, on a positive note - much of that money has already been raised.
